How to convert MB to GB
To convert MB to GB, divide by 1000. 500 MB is 0.5 GB and 2,500 MB is 2.5 GB. Windows and some apps divide by 1024, which gives slightly smaller numbers: 500 MB is about 0.49 GB there.
Data plans and phone storage are usually sold in decimal units. When an app's figures don't quite match your plan, the 1000 versus 1024 difference is often the reason.
MB to GB formula
- Decimal: GB = MB / 1000
- Binary: GiB = MiB / 1024
Example: 1,500 MB / 1000 = 1.5 GB. In binary, 1500 / 1024 = 1.46 GiB.

Why are there two answers: 1000 or 1024?
Computers count in powers of two, so early on a kilobyte was taken to mean 1,024 bytes. Standards bodies later fixed the prefixes to their usual meaning, kilo for 1,000, and added separate names for the binary units: KiB, MiB and GiB. Drive makers, network figures and macOS use the decimal units. Windows File Explorer still divides by 1024 but prints KB, MB and GB.
That's why a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GB in Windows. Nothing is missing; it's the same number of bytes counted two ways. For a longer explanation, read how many KB are in a MB and how many MB are in a GB.
File too big for an upload limit?
If the conversion shows your file is over the limit, shrink it to a set size instead of guessing. Image Compressor takes photos down to a target such as 50 KB or 200 KB, and Compress PDF does the same for documents. Aim slightly under the limit, for example 190 KB for a 200 KB cap, so the file passes whichever way the site counts.
MB to GB questions
How many MB are in 1 GB?
1000 MB in decimal, which drive makers and data plans use. 1024 MB in binary, which Windows uses.
Is 500 MB half a GB?
Yes in decimal terms. In binary it's about 0.49 GB.
Is 1 GB bigger than 1000 MB?
In decimal they're equal. In binary, 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB, so slightly more than 1,000 MiB.
Why does my 128 GB phone show less space?
Part of the space goes to the system, and some apps count in 1024s, so the figure looks smaller than the box.
Does this tool upload anything?
No. The calculation runs on your device in the browser.
