Compress JPEG to 100KB, 50KB or 20KB

Online application forms are strict about photo size. A passport-style photo might need to be under 50KB, a signature under 20KB, and a document scan under 100KB or 200KB. A photo straight from a phone camera is usually 2MB to 5MB, so it gets rejected.

Choose your limit in the Target size menu and press Start. The compressor keeps the full width and height and lowers JPEG quality first. If the photo still doesn't fit at a readable quality, it reduces the pixel dimensions in small steps until it does. The result card shows the final file size and dimensions, so you can confirm it meets the form's rules before you upload.

If a form also asks for exact dimensions, such as 200x230 pixels, set those first with Resize Image, then bring the file here to hit the KB limit.

How to compress a JPG

  1. Add photos. Drop JPG or JPEG files into the box, or tap Choose Images. Up to 200 at once.
  2. Pick a target or a quality. Use Target size for upload limits. For general use, leave it off and keep quality around 75 to 85%.
  3. Start compression. Each photo shows its new size as soon as it's done.
  4. Compare and save. Drag the slider on the preview to check faces and text, then download one photo or the full ZIP.

What JPG quality setting should you use?

85 to 95%Hard to tell apart from the original. Good for portfolios, product photos and prints.
70 to 85%The usual sweet spot for websites, email and social media. Often cuts the file to a fraction of its size.
50 to 70%Fine on a phone screen. You may notice softer edges and some blockiness in smooth skies.
Below 50%Use only to meet a hard upload limit. Fine detail and small text start to break up.

Strong compression mode also caps the long side at 2560 pixels, and Smallest practical file caps it at 1920. Most screens can't show more than that anyway.

Why some JPEG files barely get smaller

JPEG is already a compressed format. If a photo was saved at low quality once, saving it again at a similar quality changes very little. When the new file would come out the same size or larger, ConvertorLab keeps your original instead of handing you a worse copy. In that case, lowering the target or resizing the photo is the only way to make it much lighter.

Each re-save also loses a little detail. Keep your original photo, compress a copy, and don't keep re-compressing the same file over and over.

JPG compression questions

How do I compress a JPEG to 100KB?

Add the photo, choose 100 KB under Target size and press Start Compression. The tool lowers quality first and only shrinks the dimensions if it has to. The final size is shown on the result card.

How can I reduce a JPG to 50KB or 20KB?

Pick 50 KB or 20 KB in the Target size menu, or choose Custom and type any number. Very small targets like 20KB work best when the photo is a simple portrait or signature. Large landscape photos will be scaled down to fit.

Does compressing a JPG reduce quality?

A little. At 75 to 85% quality most people can't see a difference on screen. Use the before and after slider to check, and keep the original file.

Is there a limit on how many JPGs I can compress?

You can add up to 200 images or 1GB per batch, and run as many batches as you like. It's free with no account.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Compression happens in your browser. Your photos stay on your device.

Is JPG the same as JPEG?

Yes. JPG and JPEG are the same format with a different file extension. This tool accepts .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif files.

Why did the tool keep my original file?

Your JPG was already compressed well, so a new copy would not have been smaller. Try a target size or a lower quality if you need it lighter.
