KB to MB Converter

Type a size in kilobytes to get megabytes. You get the decimal answer (1 MB = 1000 KB) and the binary one Windows uses (1024 KB), so the number matches whatever you're comparing it with.

How to convert KB to MB

To convert KB to MB, divide by 1000. So 500 KB is 0.5 MB, and 2500 KB is 2.5 MB. Windows counts in steps of 1024 instead, so the same 500 KB shows as about 0.49 MB there. The converter above gives both, and the table below covers the sizes people look up most.

Most of the time you need this for an upload limit: a form says "max 2 MB" and your file says 1,850 KB. Under either counting method that file fits, because 1,850 KB is less than 2,000 KB and also less than 2,048 KB.

KB to MB formula

  • Decimal: MB = KB / 1000
  • Binary: MiB = KiB / 1024

Example: 750 KB / 1000 = 0.75 MB. In binary, 750 / 1024 = 0.732 MiB.

Why are there two answers: 1000 or 1024?

Computers count in powers of two, so early on a kilobyte was taken to mean 1,024 bytes. Standards bodies later fixed the prefixes to their usual meaning, kilo for 1,000, and added separate names for the binary units: KiB, MiB and GiB. Drive makers, network figures and macOS use the decimal units. Windows File Explorer still divides by 1024 but prints KB, MB and GB.

That's why a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GB in Windows. Nothing is missing; it's the same number of bytes counted two ways. For a longer explanation, read how many KB are in a MB and how many MB are in a GB.

File too big for an upload limit?

If the conversion shows your file is over the limit, shrink it to a set size instead of guessing. Image Compressor takes photos down to a target such as 50 KB or 200 KB, and Compress PDF does the same for documents. Aim slightly under the limit, for example 190 KB for a 200 KB cap, so the file passes whichever way the site counts.

KB to MB questions

How many KB make 1 MB?

1000 KB in the decimal system used by storage makers and macOS. 1024 KB in the binary system Windows uses, where the correct label is KiB and MiB.

Is KB bigger than MB?

No. A kilobyte is a thousand times smaller than a megabyte. The order from small to large is byte, KB, MB, GB, TB.

Is 500 KB less than 1 MB?

Yes. 500 KB is half a megabyte in decimal terms, and about 0.49 MB in binary terms.

Which value do upload forms use?

It varies and most forms don't say. Staying a little under the limit, such as 950 KB for a 1 MB cap, works with either method.

My file is too big. How do I get it under the limit?

Use the Image Compressor or Compress PDF tool and pick the target size in KB. Both run in your browser.
